P.E.A.K. Literacy Executive Director Leah Galione shares the solution to improve our kid’s reading outcomes

GAINESVILLE, FL. (EEF News) – We are pleased to have a conversation with Mrs. Leah Galione, P.E.A.K. Literacy Executive Director. When Mrs. Galione discovered that Alachua County Public Schools had the largest disparity of reading levels between Black and white students in the state, according to data from the Florida Department of Education, she sought to do something about it. “It’s our job to help all of our students achieve the reading gains necessary to compete in a global economy and contribute to the workforce,” said Galione.

PEAK Literacy (Providing Equitable Access for Kids) prepares students for personal and collective success through consistent one-to-one reading instruction provided by competent and nurturing volunteers. The organization was formerly associated with the Gainesville Bridge and has now bloomed into a national organization. “I quickly recognized that the need for this program was not limited to Gainesville.” Leah continued. “During the pandemic, we began to assist students virtually, and that opened doors to new ways to reach students outside of our location.”

Leah Galione is a University of Florida alumna with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Criminology. She and her husband, Bill Galione, have five children ages 9-19 and have been a part of the Gainesville community for over 30 years. Leah advocates for educational equity, serving on the board of GNV Thrives and IntersectionED. As Executive Director of PEAK Literacy, she desires to lead others to create systemic change in their communities with one goal—literacy for all. Leah enjoys reading, walking, and taking beach trips with her family in her spare time.
