EEF Staff Spotlight: College Coach Edwina

GAINESVILLE, FL. (EEF News) – Edwina Johnson-Hurst, EEF Program Manager is an unsung hero in college preparedness education and has been a pivotal force in the Education Equalizer Foundation (EEF) team since its inception. Her unique blend of passion for education and entrepreneurship, as the former owner of Maple Street Biscuit Company, and currently the Manager of Experiential Learning and Campus Inclusion at the University of Florida has left an indelible mark on students seeking higher education.

“My hope is to use my expertise to connect our students to meaningful experiential learning opportunities through internships and global learning, so that they are ready to accept and produce in the career fields of their choice upon graduation.”

Joining the EEF team at its inception, Edwina was a part of our inaugural Common Black College Application, HBCU College Fair. Our strategic collaboration with the Common Black College Application (CBCA) resulted in students receiving application fee waivers for over 65 colleges. Edwina’s Maple Street Biscuit Company not only sponsored a hearty breakfast but also ensured students began their day with nourishment and energy.

For three years, Edwina has been a dedicated EEF program manager and college coach mentor, guiding students through the complexities of the college application process. Her commitment extends to managing applications for a growing number of high school seniors and juniors in Alachua County, showcasing a hands-on approach to breaking down educational barriers.

Antoine Jovone Clark II, sharing thoughts after a mentor meeting with Edwina, appreciates her for being “really helpful for motivating me to dream bigger.”

Edwina’s impact is not just measured in financial contributions or events but in the lives she has touched. Her mentorship goes beyond academic guidance, instilling a sense of hope and possibility in students. Gratitude is owed to Edwina for her unwavering commitment to opening doors and creating opportunities for a brighter future.

In the realm of education, Edwina Johnson-Hurst’s journey with the EEF team and throughout her career exemplifies the profound impact one individual can have. Her commitment to breaking down barriers, providing opportunities, and offering mentorship has created a legacy that extends far beyond events and application processes.
