Celebrating HBCU Week: Visiting Tennessee State University

GAINESVILLE, FL (EEF News): In honor of HBCU Week, let’s celebrate a memorable moment when The Education Equalizer Foundation (EEF) helped a scholar take their first flight and visit Tennessee State University. This journey, made possible through the support of Overcomers International Church, highlights the power of community and the transformative impact of HBCUs.

Last fall, EEF had the privilege of taking Rnia on her very first flight to visit Tennessee State University. The experience was not just about visiting a campus but was a testament to the transformative power of opportunities that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) provide. This visit to TSU was more than a tour; it was an eye-opening experience that broadened Rnia’s aspirations and solidified the importance of higher education. Tennessee State University, an HBCU that has contributed significantly to African American professional and academic advancement, served as the perfect backdrop for Rnia’s college exploration journey.

HBCUs like Tennessee State University have a profound impact on the education and career trajectories of African American students. While HBCUs account for just 3% of the nation’s colleges and universities, they produce nearly 20% of all African American graduates. They are particularly strong in STEM fields, awarding 27% of all STEM degrees earned by African Americans. HBCUs also generate $14.8 billion in economic impact annually and support more than 134,000 jobs nationwide, both on-campus and in the communities they serve. More than 70% of HBCU students receive Pell Grants, underscoring the role these institutions play in promoting social mobility for low-income students. (Sources: UNCF, National Science Foundation, Brookings Institution)

As we celebrate HBCU Week, EEF continues to be dedicated to creating pathways to college and success for students. Moments like Rnia’s first flight are a reminder that access to education can change lives, and through community support, we can continue to make such dreams a reality. HBCUs have a long-standing history of fostering academic excellence and producing leaders in various industries. By supporting organizations like EEF and uplifting HBCUs, we contribute to a legacy that propels African American students toward a brighter future.
