The Jack and Jill of America Pensacola Chapter partnered with The Education Equalizer Foundation to offer middle—to high-school students a college empowerment tour. The journey allowed the students to visit Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Florida State University, and The University of Florida.

The adventure commenced early in the morning with a departure from Pensacola towards Florida State University. After a warm welcome, campus tour, and lunch alongside current students at FSU-Seminole Cafe, the group journeyed to the historic Florida A&M University. The afternoon was spent enjoying the campus. The evening culminated in a delightful dinner at the FAMU Student Service Center.

After checking out from the hotel the following morning, the group continued to the University of Florida. They were greeted by Juan Osorio, an EEF Intern, and Dr. Sharon Austin, an EEF Board Member, for a lunch break and a campus tour, which proved educational and enjoyable. The afternoon’s highlight was attending an insightful African American Studies class by Dr. Rik Stevenson, where current students discussed college life and study abroad opportunities. They also heard from the African American Studies Program Director and Associate Professor of History at the University of Florida, Dr. David Canton, and other special guests. The Jack and Jill of America Gainesville Chapter Vice President Pamela Davis gave the group treat bags and congratulated them on their future success. Later, they attended an EEF College Presentation with Porshe Chiles and learned how to remain engaged in their pursuit of college.

Throughout the trip, participants expressed their satisfaction and enthusiasm. One attendee shared their appreciation for the classroom visits and presentations, stating, “Loved having the classroom visit and presentations. I wouldn’t change anything!” Another newly acquainted supporter praised the initiative, saying, “Pretty encouraging. I just heard about you all, but I love this for our children. Thanks for your dedication to our youth.” Lastly, the request for more trips like this was explicit, with the remark, “Keep doing FAMU trips. They are entertaining.”

In summary, this trip was a testament to the dedication of the Jack and Jill of America Pensacola Chapter to empowering the youth and a reflection of the community’s support. The 2024 College Empowerment Tour was a resounding success, fostering a spirit of learning, exploration, and inspiration among all those who attended.
